A winter weekend in Saranac Lake

Saranac Lake is a town that loves winter, and it shows. Here, we don't just endure the cold—we celebrate it! Nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, our little village is known for being one of the coldest spots in the country, and we’ve made that part of our charm. Winter in Saranac Lake is about more than just snow. It's about active adventure, nostalgic traditions, and a (very) healthy dose of fun. If you’re ready to embrace the season like a true Saranac Laker, stay here and check out this weekend itinerary; it'll help you dive into the magic of our frosty wonderland.

Day 1: Ease into the chill

Start your Saranac Lake adventure by taking it easy. After all, isn’t winter about slowing down and savoring the season? Bundle up and stroll through our downtown after you’ve arrived, where you’ll find local shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes. Each stop feels like stepping into a classic winter postcard, complete with a nostalgic small-town atmosphere.

Need a break from the cold? Warm up with an early dinner at one of our local restaurants. And while you're exploring, be sure to visit the Adirondack Carousel—a whimsical, handcrafted ride that captures the charm of the Adirondacks (and its wildlife) in a way only Saranac Lake can. It’s a throwback to simpler times and a perfect introduction to our town's unique take on winter fun.

Day 2: Wild winter adventures

With a cup of steaming coffee or cocoa from one of our local cafes in hand, you’re ready for a day of active exploration. Head over to nearby Tupper Lake and immerse yourself in the wild beauty of the Adirondacks at The Wild Center. Exploring the Wild Walk, a treetop adventure that feels even more magical in the crisp winter air, can be the highlight of a trip to the ADK.

As an alternative, you could even spend the morning and afternoon snowshoeing or skiing through the network of trails at Paul Smith’s VIC. Trails of all skill levels feature different elements, such as snow-capped lean-tos, bog bridges overlooking beautiful wintry wetlands, and gigantic stands of old-growth hemlocks.

As evening falls, Saranac Lake’s love for winter shines at Mount Pisgah. Go night skiing under the stars, where the cool air, fresh snow, and glowing lights create a winter experience like no other. It’s an easy little ski hill to learn on, and there’s terrain for even the intermediate or expert skier or snowboarder to enjoy. And what’s a night out in Saranac without a post-ski stop for food and brews? Saranac Lake is home to a number of cozy breweries perfect for warming up and relaxing after a day of adventure.

Day 3: A day for recharging and more snow fun

By day three, you’ve fully embraced the winter vibes. Start your morning with some relaxation—whether it’s yoga at a local studio or pampering yourself at a spa, take this time to recharge for another day of winter fun.

In the afternoon, dive back into the snow. The Adirondack Rail Trail is the perfect place for a cross-country ski or snowshoe adventure. If you’re up for something a little more exhilarating, rent snowmobiles and ride through the snowy trails, feeling the wind and the thrill of winter freedom. All recreators should remember to use the trail safely!

For dinner, take a detour to one of the locally-loved dining spots along the Adirondack Rail Trail. Whether it’s Hotel Saranac’s historic elegance (off trail but provides snowmobile parking), Charlie’s Inn’s rustic warmth, or the homey atmosphere of The Belvedere, you’ll find hearty meals to satisfy your winter cravings.

The night doesn’t end there. Saranac Lake loves to celebrate, so why not check out live music or local entertainment at one of the town’s beloved venues? There’s always something happening, whether it’s a laid-back acoustic set or a lively gathering of friends and neighbors.

Day 4: A final frosty farewell

Before you hit the road, take one last morning to embrace the snow. Dewey Mountain and the Jackrabbit Trail offer easy-going cross-country skiing or snowshoeing perfect for a final breath of fresh Adirondack air. These trails take you through beautiful, snowy forests that feel both peaceful and nostalgic—a fitting way to wrap up your Saranac Lake experience.

After your morning adventure, grab a coffee to-go and soak in the memories of your winter getaway. Saranac Lake isn’t just a town that loves winter—it’s a place where winter becomes something special, something to celebrate in a way only Saranac Lakers know how.
